Our Men's Line
Lefthand Personal Care Products for Men
Our Men's line takes its name from Chief Niwot (translated into English as Lefthand) of the Southern Arapahoe Indians that once lived in the Boulder Valley.
Chief Niwot, one of the most notable Indians of the plains, is a man about whom legends were made. Niwot's story is one of honor and deceit, hope and despair. When hordes of white men began migrating to the central plains in the mid-nineteenth century, they moved into the land that was home to the Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians. In 1858, the Arapaho Chief Niwot astonished the early gold-seekers in Colorado by greeting them in their own language. He and his tribe hoped to make peace with the newcomers to allow the two cultures to share the same land and coexist peacefully. Niwot devoted his life to this struggle but his efforts ultimately failed. He was mortally wounded at the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864, along with 180 women, children, and elderly.
According to urban legend, Chief Niwot, upon being forced from the land that had been his people's home, made a prediction, which most people call a curse. The Curse of Boulder Valley, also known as Niwot's Curse, was first stated upon meeting the first white gold seekers to visit what is now known as the Boulder valley in Boulder County, Colorado. According to the chief, the curse of the valley was its breathtaking landscape. He took a last look over the landscape and proclaimed, "People, seeing the beauty of this valley will want to stay, and their staying will be the undoing of the beauty."
The loose interpretation is that Niwot cursed the people saying that once they looked upon the beauty of the valley, they couldn't leave, they would always return. The "curse" is believed to this day for it seems that anyone who leaves the Valley always comes back, unable to stay away.
